Many employers feel that in this economy employees are unlikely to jump ship. But what happens when the economy and job market turn around and your employees begin exploring options? Do you have an employee who you would hate to lose? If so, chances are they may already be a target for other employers looking for top-grade talent.
Because of the economy, many employers have reduced hours, postponed merit increases, and asked employees to do more than ever before for the same or less pay. If you are not 100% sure your best employees are completely satisfied at work, now is the time to do something about it.
Here are some inexpensive ways to show your employee that you care and provide them that little something extra they may not get elsewhere:
1. Bring in a massage therapist to do chair massage. This is a great way to let your employees know that these are stressful times and that you know they are under more pressure than ever before.
2. Surprise them with an unexpected bonus. If you have a good month or win a big sale, reward top staffers with a bonus out of the blue. The amount is not as important as the recognition and reassurance that business is improving.
3. Cover lunch or dinner. Recognize hard work by treating key employees to lunch or dinner on the company.
4. Pay for the health club. Healthy and fit employees miss less work, have fewer healthcare claims, and handle stress better. Encourage employees to exercise by covering the membership to a nearby club.
5. Plan a team building event. Get out of the office together to raise money for charity, go to happy hour, or attend an athletic event. Employees are less likely to leave a job if they develop legitimate friendships with coworkers.
