Health Benefits of Laughing

Humor for Health

It should come as no surprise that people who laugh a lot tend to not only have more fun, but they tend to live longer and healthier lives . Unfortunately, while children laugh upwards of 300 times a day, most adults laugh less than 20 times--and that's when we're feeling "normal" and not sad or angry.

At home:
Some researchers say that laughing (a big belly laugh) can burn as many calories as several minutes on a stationery bike. For a regular belly-laughing session, join a Laughter Yoga class , where you'll stretch, laugh, and hee-haw your way to health (and make new friends)!

At work:
Hopefully you have a few co-workers who make for great company, so instead of reading the news over your lunch break, join them in a walk, sharing uplifting stories that will make you laugh. Another option is to bring a humorous book to work that you can look over throughout your day; good choices include any of the David Sedaris' books including Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, and Holidays on Ice. For true hilarity pick up Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods.(P.S. The books are also available on CD, making your commute a lot more comical.)

At the spa:
Sheila Cluff, founder of the Oaks at Ojai Health Spa in California, recommends daily laughter to stay fit, and makes a point that all of her guests leave with a smile on their face.
